Mild climate, a strong healthcare reputation, and established routes for retirees and remote earners. Portugal has long been a leading destination for retirees seeking a mild climate, dependable healthcare, historic cities, and easy access to the rest of Europe. Its residence visa for retirees and people living on their own income offers a potential pathway for applicants supported by pensions, investments, rental income, or other reliable passive income. One of the most asked about destinations we advise on.

Europe’s classic retirement route—with higher financial requirements

Applicants must demonstrate sufficient financial resources to support themselves in Portugal. For 2026, the baseline means-of-subsistence requirement is tied to Portugal’s monthly minimum wage of €920 for the primary applicant, with additional amounts required for a spouse or dependents.

The initial residence visa is valid for four months and allows two entries into Portugal. During that period, the applicant must apply for a residence permit through Porugal's offcial Agência para a Integração, Migrações e Asilo (Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum) or AIMA.

You’ll find a relaxed lifestyle, Atlantic beaches, established international communities, and destinations ranging from Lisbon and Porto to the Algarve, Madeira, and the Azores. Portugal is no longer Europe’s cheapest option, especially in its most popular cities, but it remains an appealing choice for those who want long-term residence, European connectivity, and a high quality of life.

Passive income routes

RETIREES / INDEPENDENT MEANS

Commonly used by people who can show stable income from outside the country. Exact program names, income levels, and requirements change, so we confirm the current picture during your session.

Remote work routes

EMployees / Self Employed

Options aimed at people earning from clients or an employer abroad. Eligibility and thresholds shift, and are verified before you rely on them.

Investment routes

Heigher Commitment

Routes tied to a qualifying investment. These carry the most conditions and the most change over time, so treat any figure as something to reconfirm.

Mockup note: pathway blocks are intentionally general. This template holds the structure. Steph or the client drops in verified, dated specifics per country before publishing, or keeps athem off the page.
